REFLECTION JOURNAL #4: SHAPE

7/27/17-Session 4
Theme:
SHAPE

I have not had much experience with any of the LMA or LOD shape and relating work at all so I appreciated digging in and unpacking some of these concepts.  Overall I found this work to connect a great deal with analysis of behaviors in the world and how this work would also be beneficial for educators to be exposed to in order to analyze not only student behaviors but also their own relationship with students.

I found the shape forms to be clear and images that would be accessible for students.  I enjoyed seeing the varying group interpretations of their scores and found the ones that resonated with me had clear use of choreographic devices.  I also appreciated the use of the “pinball” theme that one group used, as I know that my students find theme as another helpful resource when creating choreography.

The videos were also helpful tools, however I had some questions regarding the difference between looking at spatial relationships around the body and the shaping.  This was later cleared up with the understanding that depending on what lens you are observing, one might focus on either.  I also identified that in transverse kinesphere, the attention is very personal whereas the shaping seems to lend itself to relationships outside of the self.

In the work we did with LOD, I appreciated the use of layering the material with our previous choreography.  If we had time I would have liked to investigate a possible narrative that might have been more purposeful in regards to the relationships that could be  built using the concepts of awareness, addressing, nearness, contact, and support!  I also liked the work we did with analyzing images according to shape (LMA) and relationships (LOD).  I would insert this into work that I have done with social issue choreography!
