DAY 1 – BODY; ACTION
During the remainder of the day, observe and make note (words, symbols, photos) of the body action(s) being done by another person. This can be something that you observe live or that you see on film/TV. Be prepared to demonstrate what you observed and to describe the context in which it occurred.
I observed a young girl in Bangladesh
on a PBS News Hour broadcast. The young
girl is partaking in the action of pushing a lever from a water well to obtain
water in a large jug. The young girl’s left
heel is pressed against a top step/wall that surrounds the well pump, as her
left toes are wrapped and gripping forward over the top of the step. Her right foot is about a foot forward of her
left with her weight forward on her toes and her knees in a slight flexion. The
young girl begins standing on the higher level (step) and the right forward on
the ball/toes, maintaining balance by supporting her weight with the weight of
the lever. As she initiates the push of
the lever with her arms/hands extended in the sagittal plane (left arm/hand
above right), her shoulders slightly rise upward and flexion forward to create
the gestural water pump movement. Her
right knee also moves into a deeper flexion with the weight of her body moving
toward her right toes and the heel lifting upward. The 2nd time she pushes her weight forward;
her tongue juts forward out of her mouth and her head slightly rotates to the
left. After the push of the lever
forward, the weight of her torso slightly rebounds back upright to the higher
lever with a slight suspension/breath and the legs almost fully extend (less
flexion). The arms remain almost in
full extension through out the push forward and the rebound backward. The movement is sequential with the action
feeling continuous and fluid.
